Racial Justice Workshops -- Introduction

Online Racial Justice Training

Saturday May 5 & Saturday May 12, noon – 2:00 pm Eastern Time

Cost: $50  ($10 discount if you pay online)

Racial justice training for all active ministry personnel was mandated at the 39th General Council 2006. The proposal came out of a long history of the United Church's engagement with issues of social justice. In 2000, the United Church adopted its Anti-Racism Policy statement; racial justice training is one effort to help the church continue to live out its principles.

Traditional-style workshops were offered across the church throughout 2010, and most ministry personnel participated in one of these. These online workshops have been designed for those who could not participate in one of last year's workshops.

The Online Process

We're going to use Internet tools and telephone conference call technology to simulate a face-to-face workshop. Participants will be asked to dial in to the conference call system at the appointed time, using an ordinary telephone. They'll also be asked to use an Internet browser to navigate to the page where we'll be showing a PowerPoint presentation.

The telephone conference call system is specially designed to allow for break-out groups, and much of the work will be in small group discussion. You will connect to the conference call via a toll-free long distance number; there will be no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

We've put together an FAQ page to address many questions that participants may have. Please click here to be directed to this. If you have further questions, please contact Stephen Fetter (sfetter@united-church.ca) at the General Council Office.
What People are Saying

Good work. I was skeptical, but it all worked seamlessly. Congratulations.
-- Rev. Rob Oliphant

Thank you for an uplifting first session. I am new to phone conferences etc and I must be honest I thought to myself...oh dear another unexciting thing to do. I was wrong. I was totally excited by the format, the content, the humour and connecting with others out there like me who are afraid to use "words" in case we are accused of being racist. Being an Australian and having  three dark skin children and having many friends from many other countries--I would never consider myself a racist, nor have racist thoughts.  Thank you for putting this worthy course together and may God bring peace and understanding to peoples hearts.
-- Rev Ian Olive
