Learning Circles: Telephone Groups

... when it's too far to meet face-to-face

We are reaching across the whole nation by offering our Learning Circles using a telephone conference call service.

These kinds of Learning Circles need to be a little smaller than their face-to-face cousins -- 6 or 7 voices on the telephone is lots to keep track of when there's no body language to go along with it. And we find that these groups do better meeting for 1 1/2 hours twice a month -- somehow trying to meet for longer is a lot more tiring in this medium than it is when we're all gathered in the same room.

The telephone offers exciting advantages to Learning Circles:

  • these groups will involve people in even the most remote locations
  • people will connect without travel time or expense
  • we will form groups around particular topics or issues of interest

The Process
  • A catalogue listing all the groups being offered (including schedule and the name of the facilitator) will be posted on this website
  • Participants will sign up using a form on this website, and will receive confirmation of their enrolment by email
  • All participants will dial into a central telephone conference call service using a toll-free 1-800 number. There are no long distance charges for the participants.

Groups for 2009 - 2010

  • Currently there is one group meeting in Alberta Conference, and two others in Ontario.
  • A couple of hybrid groups are being formed in the Kingston Ontario area, that will meet face-to-face when the driving is good, and by conference call between November and March.
  •  Currently we hope to offer several groups to a general audience, and also groups targetted at the following specific groups:
    • ministry personnel in their first five years of paid accountable ministry
    • youth ministers / leaders
    • rural & remote ministers and church leaders
  • If you're interested in facilitating a group like this, please contact Stephen Fetter at the National Office.
